Welcome to The Bourbon Social — a weekly hangout for people who love bourbon and hate wasting money on it. Every week I review a new or upcoming release: what’s in the bottle, what it actually tastes like, what it costs, and whether it’s a Buy, Try, or Pass. No sponsors, no hype. This Week: Buffalo Trace Single Oak Rye Bourbon (2026)
Buffalo Trace spent years releasing 192 experimental barrels in its Single Oak Project, each one tweaking a single variable — wood grain, char level, entry proof, even the warehouse floor. Fans voted, and Barrel #80 won. This release recreates those exact conditions and makes it a permanent brand. Great concept. The catch is the price for a half-size bottle.
The Specs
Distillery: Buffalo Trace
What it is: First permanent release from the Single Oak Project (Barrel #80)
Mash bill: Rye bourbon
Proof: 90 (45% ABV) — notably low and gentle
Age: 8 years
Size / Price: 375ml, ~$74.99 (limited)
The Nose
Light and easygoing. Classic bourbon notes lead — vanilla, soft oak, caramel — with a nice second layer of Granny Smith apple and honey that gives it a little intrigue.
The Taste
Toffee and vanilla cream up front, honeyed sweetness through the middle, then seasoned oak and gentle baking spice on a short-to-medium finish. At 90 proof it’s soft and approachable — nothing aggressive, nothing to hunt for.
The Verdict: TRY (if you’re curious) / PASS (on value)
It’s pleasant and well-made, but “pleasant” is a hard sell at ~$75 for 375ml. If you love the Single Oak story or want to taste what a data-driven “perfect barrel” tastes like, it’s a fun pour. If you just want great bourbon for the money, your dollar goes further elsewhere. Best for collectors and Buffalo Trace completists; everyday sippers can skip it.
