Cask press materials

Copper & Cask, the Boston-based brand that has built its name on limited small batch bourbons, just released “X,” its first permanent, ongoing bottling. It’s a 10-year barrel proof bourbon built from 45 hand-selected barrels, and the brand says it wanted its first ongoing release “to make a statement.” Here’s the catch worth knowing up front: the first batch has already sold out on the brand’s own site, so this one is about timing.

The Specs

Distillery: Copper & Cask (independent bottler; liquid distilled at MGP Indiana, aged in Kentucky, Indiana and Rhode Island)

Mash bill: Not fully published. The brand lists a blend of Low-Rye (21%) and High-Rye (36%) bourbon; the corn/rye/barley split is not disclosed.

Proof / ABV: 116.4 proof / 58.2% ABV

Age: 10 years (barrels of roughly 10-12 years)

Price: $69.99 SRP per the launch press coverage; the brand’s own site lists $74.99

Price segment: $50-$100

Availability: Limited. The first batch is 45 barrels (about 6,350 bottles) and the brand’s site shows it sold out; the brand says future drops will come in small batches.

Where to Find It

Start with the brand’s own shop at copperandcaskspirits.com, which ships to 37 states (free shipping on 6+ bottles) and has a store locator on the site. The launch announcement says “select retailers nationwide,” but no specific stores were named, so I won’t guess. Check the locator and ask your local shop whether they received any. Since it’s sold out at the source, expect to look a bit. This isn’t a unicorn, so if you see it priced far above the roughly $70-$75 retail, skip it, and never pay a stranger up front.

The Nose

Per the official notes, milk chocolate and salted caramel lead. Expect a sweet, dessert-leaning nose with some warmth from the proof.

The Taste

Butterscotch and chocolate-covered almonds up front, moving into chocolate cake and cherry cola in the middle. The finish is long, with toffee, mocha and candied orange peel. At 116 proof, a few drops of water may open it up.

What the distillery says: “On the nose, this Bourbon has aromas of milk chocolate and salted caramel. Once sipped, sweeter flavors of butterscotch and chocolate-covered almonds appear, along with notes of chocolate cake and cherry cola. The finish is long and layered with hints of toffee, mocha and candied orange peel.” (Copper & Cask)

The Verdict: TRY

A 10-year, barrel proof bourbon at around $70 is good value on paper, and the flavor profile suggests a pour for people who like their bourbon sweet and rich. Two honest caveats: it’s sourced MGP whiskey (which the brand states openly), and the mash bill isn’t fully disclosed. If you find a bottle at retail, it’s worth a try.

What are you pouring this week? Drop it in the comments.

Please drink responsibly.

Starlight Distillery Estate Drop: Three Bottles From the Huber Family The grain comes from one place, the distilling happens in another, the aging in a third. Estate whiskey is the opposite: the grain is grown, milled, cooked, fermented, distilled, barreled, aged and bottled on the same land. That gives you a whiskey shaped by one place’s soil, water and climate, and a supply chain you can actually trace.

“Estate” used to be an unregulated word. The Estate Whiskey Alliance, a program from the University of Kentucky, now runs an Estate Whiskey Certified mark with two hard rules: every production step happens on the estate, and at least 67% of the mash bill grain is grown on land the distillery owns or controls. The percentage on the bottle tells you how much came from the estate; 100% means every grain did.

Why care? Because it rewards distilleries that farm, it keeps “estate” from turning into a marketing word like “small batch,” and it lets you taste a claim you can verify.

Meet Starlight

Starlight Distillery (est. 2001) sits on the Huber family farm in Borden, Indiana. Ted, Blake and Christian Huber hand-selected the barrels in this kit. They distill on Vendome copper pot stills and age in the original red warehouses, with heirloom corn and Indiana rye grown on the farm.

1. Estate Collection 7-Year Indiana Straight Bourbon

Price segment: Under $100 ($59.99) | Availability: Allocated, very limited (distillery and online; sold from October 3, 2026)

110.8 proof, 7 years, 80% estate-grown grain. Heirloom corn, Indiana rye and malted barley, sweet mash fermented, double pot distilled on Vendome copper stills, entered at low proof and aged slowly. Starlight says each barrel was hand-selected by Ted, Blake and Christian Huber and bottled only at full maturity.

The craftsmanship is in the barrel and the warehouse. This bourbon spent its seven years in the distillery’s original red warehouses, which Starlight describes as a dynamic aging environment that pushed the whiskey to its peak. Low barrel-entry proof and slow aging are choices that build depth over time, and you can taste the intent in how the pieces fit together.

Nose: Beautiful caramel and vanilla up front, with toasted oak and brown sugar, and hints of fruit behind them. A rich, inviting aroma.

Palate: It carries many of the same notes as the nose: rich caramelized sugar and vanilla, toasted oak, and hints of coconut and baking spice. The sweetness is well balanced by the oak and spice, and the texture is buttery and viscous.

Finish: Long and warming, with oak, spice and a confectionary sweetness. At 110.8 proof, it preserves the character of this bourbon beautifully.

In short: A rich, complex aroma, sweet caramel and vanilla forward, a buttery, viscous palate and a warm, lingering finish.

Score: 8.5/10. Just 250 bottles from a single Mizunara cask: 200 went to online-lottery winners and 50 sold at the distillery on September 12, 2026.

110 proof, 10 years, single barrel. Starlight’s signature three-grain mash bill (60% corn, 20% rye, 20% malted barley), matured in new charred American oak, then finished in Japanese Mizunara oak from trees 200 to 500 years old. Starlight calls it the oldest bourbon it has finished in Mizunara to date. The barrel entered at 108 to 116 proof.

Nose: Complex, with real depth. Sandalwood, coconut, vanilla bean and warm baking spice.

Palate: Creamy vanilla and caramelized sugar with soft spice, layered with a subtle, exotic wood character.

Finish: Long and elegant, gently spiced, with lingering oak and a delicate sweetness.

Score: 8.6/10. Ten years of age, a single barrel and that exotic Mizunara character make it the most complex pour of the three, with sandalwood, coconut and vanilla bean in a long, elegant finish. At $149.99 and unicorn-level scarcity, it is the one to grab if you see it.

Estate Collection 7-Year (8.5, BUY), tied for second. Rich, layered and generous, with caramel, brown sugar and oak at 110.8 proof. At $59.99 it is the best value of the three, if you can find one.

Honey Reserve (8.5, BUY), tied for second. Subtle, elegant and beautifully balanced, with honey sweetness that never takes over the oak. At about $65 it is the easiest of the three to pour for a friend.

All three are a BUY.

Closing

What makes this kit special is where it comes from. Because Starlight grows its own grain and does the distilling, aging and bottling on the Huber family farm in Borden, Indiana, every bottle carries a sourcing story you can trace from field to glass. You can taste the craftsmanship in the heirloom corn, the hand-selected barrels and the patience in the warehouse. Three different bottles, three BUY verdicts, and one family clearly proud of what it makes. Starlight is a distillery to watch, and estate whiskey is better for having the Hubers in it. Cheers to the Huber family and the whole Starlight team.

Thank you

A big thank-you to the whole Starlight Distillery team, and especially Christian Huber, for sending us the Sample Tasting Kit and trusting us to review it. This review is based on the three 100ml samples in the kit. Per our policy, we are willing to purchase a bottle at retail price, but media samples are welcome. Receiving a sample does not buy a good score: every bottle gets a straight BUY / TRY / PASS verdict.

All photos: The Bourbon Social. Updated monthly.

October 2026

Four Roses 2026 Limited Edition Small Batch (about $140 to $150): pre-allocated through retailers, with delivery targeted for September and October.

Parker’s Heritage Collection 20th Edition (about $200): limited quantities at select retailers, no firm date announced. Charity raffles are an honest way to get a shot at hard-to-find bottles. Prices listed are suggested retail, and secondary-market prices run much higher. (https://www.beamdistilling.com/old-grand-dad-bourbon/whiskies/old-grand-dad-7-year-bottled-in-bond)

Old Grand-Dad has long been the quiet value pick on the shelf, and Beam’s 7-year bonded release gives it a real age statement. This is the second annual edition, distilled and barreled in fall 2018 from a single season, as the Bottled-in-Bond Act requires. It lands at a suggested $39.99, which is rare territory for seven-year-old bourbon.

The Specs

Distillery: James B. Beam Distilling Co. (Clermont, Kentucky)

Mash bill: Beam’s high-rye recipe (the brand does not publish percentages; commonly reported as roughly 63% corn / 27% rye / 10% malted barley)

Proof / ABV: 100 proof / 50% ABV

Age: 7 years (distilled and barreled fall 2018)

Price / where to find it: $39.99 SRP; a wide release, so check your regular liquor store

The Nose

Caramel and vanilla lead, with warm baking spice behind them. Expect a little clove and anise from the rye, plus some nutty, toasty depth.

The Taste

The front is sweet, velvety caramel and vanilla. The middle brings charred oak and cinnamon, with rye spice keeping it from getting sugary. The finish is long and peppery, with caramel lingering.

What the distillery says: Beam describes a golden color with deep copper tones, a bold aroma of caramel, cinnamon and vanilla, and a full-bodied palate of sweet, velvety caramel, charred oak and vanilla, ending in a “long lingering peppery finish.”

The Verdict: BUY

This is for anyone who wants a daily sipper that tastes older and pricier than it is. At roughly $40 for 100 proof, seven years of age and a bonded label, it is hard to argue with. Other reviewers have called it a bargain too, so grab a bottle while it is still easy to find.

What are you pouring this week? Parker was diagnosed with ALS in 2010, and a portion of every bottle sold goes to the ALS Association. Heaven Hill has donated more than $1.4 million through the partnership so far. For the 20th edition, they went with something Parker championed for decades: rye backset, a technique that recycles liquid from rye whiskey distillation into the bourbon’s fermentation.
<div Hill’s traditional bourbon mash bill), fermented with rye backset

Proof / ABV: 118 proof / 59% ABV (barrel proof, non-chill filtered)

Age: 14 years (distilled October 2011 to January 2012)

Price / where to find it: $199.99 MSRP. Limited national release since September 2026, only 100 barrels. Expect markups well above MSRP at many stores.

The Nose

Deep and oak-forward, as you’d expect at 14 years. Dark caramel, toasted oak and leather come first, then the rye backset shows up as baking spice, clove and a little black pepper. With some time in the glass, dried cherry and vanilla bean round it out.

The Taste

The front is rich and thick, with brown sugar and caramel holding up the 118 proof surprisingly well. The middle turns spicier and drier, with cinnamon, cocoa and plenty of seasoned oak. The finish is long and warm, with leather, spice and a lingering tannic dryness. A few drops of water soften the heat and bring out more fruit.

The Verdict: TRY

At $199.99, Parker’s 20th is a fair price for a 14-year, barrel-proof, 100-barrel bourbon, and a portion of every bottle goes to ALS research. It’s built for people who love old, oak-heavy, high-proof bourbon. If you’re more of a sweet-and-easy drinker, try a pour at a good whiskey bar before you buy a bottle. And don’t pay $300 or more just because it’s on a top shelf.

What are you pouring this week? Bottled-in-bond bourbons are perfect here: they’re 100 proof, affordable and full of flavor. href="https://unsplash.com/@stephen_ventura">Stephen Ventura on Unsplash

First, what “allocated” actually means

Distilleries make a limited amount of certain bottles each year and split it among distributors. Distributors then hand out small amounts to individual stores. A store might get two bottles of something, or none. That’s why the same bottle can be “sold out everywhere” on release day and then show up quietly on a random Tuesday.

1. Enter every lottery you can

Many state-run liquor systems and some large retailers run online lotteries or drawings for allocated bottles. You sign up, enter for the bottles you want, and winners get to buy at retail price. They’re free to enter, fair, and the best odds most people will ever get. Search your state’s alcohol control board site, plus the big retailers near you, for “lottery,” “raffle” or “drawing.”

2. Become a regular at one or two good stores

Allocated bottles often go to the store’s best customers, not whoever shows up first. Pick a store or two with good staff, buy your everyday bottles there, and get to know the people behind the counter. Ask questions about what they’re excited about, not just “what do you have in the back?” Relationships take time, but they work.

3. Learn delivery days

Most stores get shipments on predictable days. Ask, politely, when their distributor delivers. Showing up the morning after a delivery beats refreshing social media every night.

4. Know the MSRP before you shop

Write down the suggested retail price of the bottles you’re hunting. Some stores mark allocated bottles up two or three times. You’re allowed to walk away, and you should. Our Release Radar lists MSRP for the big releases every month.

5. Be careful with the secondary market

Reselling alcohol without a license is illegal in most states, and the private “bourbon groups” where bottles change hands are full of risks:

Counterfeits and refills. Empty bottles of rare bourbon get refilled with cheaper whiskey and resealed.

No recourse. If the bottle is fake, broken or never ships, you’re out of luck.

Prices built on hype, not quality. Plenty of allocated bottles aren’t better than great shelf bourbon that costs a fraction of the price.

6. Don’t sleep on the shelf

The honest truth: some of the best bourbon you can buy is sitting on the shelf right now at a fair price. Bottled-in-bond bourbons, single barrel store picks, and well-made craft releases often beat the bottles people line up for. Hunt for fun, but don’t let it ruin the hobby.

Our rule of thumb

If you wouldn’t pay the price for what’s in the bottle without the hype on the label, pass.

Happy hunting. What’s the one bottle you’re chasing this season? Tell us in the comments.

Please drink responsibly.

Start Here: Bourbon 101

What makes it bourbon, how to read a label, and how to taste like you mean it

The Bourbon Social

New here? Jonge on Unsplash

What makes a whiskey “bourbon”

By U.S. law, bourbon has to check every one of these boxes:

Made in the United States. Not just Kentucky, though most of it comes from there.

Made from a grain mix (the “mash”) that’s at least 51% corn.

Aged in new, charred oak containers.

Distilled to no more than 160 proof, and put into the barrel at no more than 125 proof.

Bottled at 80 proof or higher.

Nothing added but water. No coloring, no flavoring.

There’s no minimum age for plain “bourbon.” That’s where the next few terms come in.

Straight bourbon

“Straight” means the whiskey has been aged at least two years with nothing added. If it’s younger than four years, the label has to tell you the age.

Bottled-in-bond

This is the strictest standard on the shelf, and it dates back to the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897. A bonded bourbon has to come from one distillery and one distilling season, age at least four years in a federally bonded warehouse, and be bottled at exactly 100 proof. It’s one of the best value signals in bourbon.

Mash bill: the recipe

The mash bill is the mix of grains. Corn brings the sweetness. The second grain sets the personality:

High-rye bourbons lean spicy, with cinnamon, clove and pepper. Think Four Roses or New Riff.

Wheated bourbons swap rye for wheat and drink softer and rounder. Think Maker’s Mark or Weller.

A little malted barley helps with fermentation in almost every recipe.

Label words worth knowing

Proof is double the alcohol percentage. 100 proof = 50% ABV.

Barrel proof (or cask strength) means bottled straight from the barrel without being watered down.

Single barrel means every bottle comes from one barrel, so two bottles of the same brand can taste different.

Small batch sounds official but has no legal definition. It just means a smaller blend of barrels.

Allocated means a limited bottle shipped to stores in small quantities, often with a big markup. Shelf bottles are the ones you can always find.

How to taste bourbon

Use a tulip-shaped glass like a Glencairn. It focuses the aroma.

Nose it gently with your mouth slightly open. Don’t shove your nose in, because the alcohol will burn.

Take a small first sip just to get your palate used to the proof.

On the second sip, notice the front (first flavors), the middle, and the finish (what lingers).

Add a few drops of water. It often opens up a high-proof pour.

How our verdicts work

Every review ends with one of three verdicts:

BUY: Worth the money at its normal price. Pick up a bottle.

TRY: Worth a pour at a bar or from a friend before you commit to a full bottle.

PASS: There are better ways to spend that money.

A high price or a rare label never earns a BUY on its own.

Got a bottle you want reviewed next? Drop it in the comments.

Please drink responsibly.

New Riff Bottled-in-Bond Review

The world’s best Distilling

Every so often an awards panel hands down a verdict that makes the whole hunting culture look a little silly. That’s what happened in March when the 2026 World Whiskies Awards named New Riff Bottled-in-Bond the World’s Best Bourbon — not a dusty, not a single-barrel lottery ticket, but a $40 bottle you can walk in and buy in all fifty states. New Riff has been quietly making the case for a decade now from Newport, Kentucky, and this is the bottle the whole operation is built around.

The Specs

Distillery: New Riff Distilling, Newport, Kentucky (founded 2014 by Ken Lewis; family-owned, distills everything it bottles)

Mash bill: 65% corn, 30% rye, 5% malted barley — non-GMO grains, full sour mash “Kentucky Regimen”

Proof / ABV: 100 proof / 50% ABV (bottled-in-bond, so the proof is the law, not a choice)

Age: Minimum four years in new charred oak; bottled-in-bond requires a single distilling season from a single distillery

Price / where to find it: Around $40 SRP, commonly $38–$50 depending on your state. National distribution — most decent liquor stores carry it.

The Nose

That 30% rye announces itself immediately: dry baking spice, black pepper, and a green herbal edge that keeps the sweetness in check. Underneath there’s brown sugar, orange peel, and something like toasted rye bread — a savory note that’s unusual at this price. The lack of chill filtration shows up as weight; it smells fuller and oilier than most 100-proof four-year bourbons.

The Taste

The front is bright and grain-forward — caramel and cinnamon arriving fast rather than a slow syrupy build. Mid-palate it turns properly spicy, with clove, dark cherry, and a dusty rye character that gives the whole thing structure instead of just heat. The finish is long and dry, more pepper and oak tannin than vanilla, and it lingers longer than the age statement has any right to deliver. This is not a soft bourbon; it wants a few minutes in the glass and rewards a couple drops of water.

The Verdict: BUY

If your shelf skews toward wheated, dessert-leaning bourbons, this will read as aggressive — that’s the point, and it’s the best argument for keeping a high-rye bottle in rotation. For $40 you’re getting bonded proof, no chill filtration, full transparency about who distilled it, and a flavor profile with actual opinions. It’s a legitimate everyday pour that also holds up to a serious side-by-side, and it makes a lot of $80 bottles look overpriced.

One honest caveat: batch variation is real here, and New Riff runs hot on rye spice. If you’ve bounced off high-rye bourbons before, try a pour at a bar before committing to a bottle.

Tasting notes are a starting point, not gospel — your palate is the one that matters, so adjust these to what you actually find in the glass.

What are you pouring this week? Not a subtle nose, but an inviting one.

Palate

Butterscotch and baked apple up front, with toasted oak running underneath. The follow-through is where it earns its stripes — sweet, spice, and oak land in genuine balance rather than any one note taking over. Mouthfeel is silky, coats the whole palate, and that’s where cocoa and brandied cherries start to show up on the back end.

Overall

Full-bodied and sweet-forward from start to finish. True to the Sour Mash’s reputation, this one refuses to slot neatly into bourbon or rye territory — it just does its own thing, and at barrel strength that identity comes through even more clearly than in the standard release.

How It Stacks Up

Comparing notes against other early reviews of this release: the caramel, brown sugar, and toasted oak show up almost everywhere, so that part of the profile seems consistent bottle to bottle. Where I landed a little differently — other reviewers pulled more cinnamon bark, clove, and dried stone fruit on the nose, and tobacco/almond notes on the palate. Mine skewed more toward the chocolate-caramel, Snickers-bar lane, with brandied cherries doing the work other reviewers got from stone fruit. Worth noting since batch variation is real, even within the same release.

Bourbon Social Rating: 81/100

Good — sits at the top of the “enjoyable but not remarkable” tier, just short of Very Good. Classic bourbon notes lead — vanilla, soft oak, caramel — with a nice second layer of Granny Smith apple and honey that gives it a little intrigue.

The Taste

Toffee and vanilla cream up front, honeyed sweetness through the middle, then seasoned oak and gentle baking spice on a short-to-medium finish. At 90 proof it’s soft and approachable — nothing aggressive, nothing to hunt for.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" but “pleasant” is a hard sell at ~$75 for 375ml. If you love the Single Oak story or want to taste what a data-driven “perfect barrel” tastes like, it’s a fun pour. If you just want great bourbon for the money, your dollar goes further elsewhere. Best for collectors and Buffalo Trace completists; everyday sippers can skip it.

What are you pouring this week?
